白色或类白色结晶性粉末，几无臭，味苦。易溶于甲醇或稀盐酸，溶于乙醇，略溶于异丙醇，微溶于水。熔点141～143℃。37℃时在水中的溶解度为1.14%。急性毒性LD50小鼠，大鼠(mg/kg)：2600，5000口服；150，106静脉注射；470，650腹腔注射。组胺H2受体拮抗剂。能抑制组胺刺激引起的胃酸分泌，又能抑制由食物、五肽胃泌素、咖啡因和胰岛素等所诱发的胃酸分泌，还能抑制基础胃酸分泌。用于胃及十二指肠溃疡、消化性食道炎、卓-艾综合症。用于治疗消化性溃疡。
